Elderly Caucasian woman being unhappy with text "Signs of Elder Abuse"

Abuse can happen at any age, no matter the person’s background. Today, we are going to specifically talk about elder abuse. This is abuse that occurs to adults aged 60 and up. Elder abuse is not just confined to physical or mental abuse, it can also be emotional or financial. Neglect also falls under the umbrella of abuse. Since this can happen anywhere, it’s important to spot signs of trouble. Here are common signs of elder abuse provided by the National Institute on Aging.

  • Trouble sleeping
  • Seeming depressed or confused
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Acting agitated or violent
  • Becoming withdrawn
  • Displaying signs of trauma, such as rocking back and forth
  • Unexplained bruising, burning, or scarring
  • Unwashed hair or dirty clothes

Elder abuse, while often a crime perpetrated by someone else, can be self-inflicted. Be sure to keep that in mind when noticing signs.
